Our Story: The Cowboy Sport Coat Company
Espuela Design Co., proudly known as The Cowboy Sport Coat Company, was located in Brenham, Texas, the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream. Since 2014, Cody and Karen have dedicated themselves to creating cowboy sport coats and western jackets that embody the traditions, values, and heritage of the cowboy lifestyle. What began as a dream rooted in the rodeo and farming industries has grown into a respected western brand known for high-quality designs, timeless style, and a deep connection to the western way of life. Cody’s upbringing was shaped by hard work and heritage. Raised in a family of cotton farmers, he went on to compete in rodeo and build a lifetime of experience in both farming and ranching. Karen, an agricultural teacher for over 20 years, brought her own love for the industry and her passion for people into the brand. Together, they created Espuela Design Co. with a vision to honor the cowboy lifestyle while providing men with a polished, professional look that pairs perfectly with boots and jeans. The name Espuela, which means spur in Spanish, reflects the symbol of cowboy tradition and appears proudly in the company’s logo. Every coat is designed in Texas, created from the ranch Cody and Karen call home, and built with the western lifestyle and American values at its core. The company is also a proud supporter of organizations that carry the cowboy spirit forward, including the PRCA, WRCA, PRB, BFO, and FFA, as well as other groups dedicated to rodeo and agriculture. Espuela Design Co. is more than a brand; it is a way of life. Beyond producing luxury cowboy sport coats, Cody and Karen also operate a production company that hosts the Westgate Las Vegas NFR Viewing Party for the Wrangler NFR, one of the premier celebrations in the rodeo industry. Traveling across the country, they set up booths at major PRCA rodeos and western events like CattleCon, bringing their designs directly to cowboys, ranch families, and western enthusiasts. This online store was built to extend that same tradition to anyone who values the western way of life. To wear an Espuela sport coat is to carry forward a legacy of heritage, pride, and class. These are not just jackets; they are luxury western sport coats designed for cowboys who believe in tradition and the importance of looking sharp while honoring their roots. At Espuela Design Co., it truly means something to dress like a cowboy.

From a Love Story to The Cowboy Sport Coat Company
Espuela Design Co. began as a love story. Cody, a skilled leather craftsman raised in a family of cotton farmers and shaped by a lifetime in rodeo and ranching, built Karen her first purse using pieces of his family’s history—a saddle blanket, a vintage belt, and an old laundry pin. What started as a heartfelt gift soon grew into a thriving purse brand known for honoring the cowboy lifestyle and western heritage through craftsmanship and design.
For years, Cody and Karen shared their work with the western community at rodeos, cattle shows, and events, treating every customer like family. While purses are still available online and at shows, their vision has evolved into something even greater: the creation of luxury cowboy sport coats and western jackets. Designed in Texas and built with tradition at the core, each coat reflects their values of pride, authenticity, and class. Today, Espuela Design Co. continues to celebrate the cowboy way of life, crafting timeless pieces that pair perfectly with boots and jeans while honoring the heritage that started it all.

The Legacy of the Original Saddle Blanket Purse:
Before Espuela Design Co. became known as The Cowboy Sport Coat Company, it was the saddle blanket purse that first left their mark on the western community. What began as a simple gift from Cody to Karen—a purse made from a vintage saddle blanket, an old laundry pin, and a worn belt—quickly became one of the most iconic accessories in the western industry. Cowboys’ wives and cowgirls alike sought them out, and soon these handcrafted bags were carried everywhere from rodeos to ranch gatherings. Cody didn’t realize at the time that he was creating something every cowgirl would long to have. The bags grew so popular that they launched the company itself and inspired countless imitators, though none can match the authenticity of the original Espuela saddle blanket bags. Today, while the brand has evolved with a focus on luxury cowboy sport coats, these bags remain a story worth remembering—symbols of heritage, craftsmanship, and the impact made within the western lifestyle.
